5 Reasons Why A Horse Might Hollow His Back

People often talk about the negative repercussions of a horse that moves with a hollow back. It's fairly easy to see once you know what you're looking for: the swayed-looking back, the dropped underbelly, and sometimes, you can also see an awkwardly neck jutting up and out. Some horses show obvious signs of discomfort but often, horses get used to working in this posture and generally truck along, legs moving but back tight and tense.

So the first thing to do is to understand how it looks and then, why it happens. Because only when we know WHY, will we be able to begin to do something about it.

What makes a horse hollow his back?

1. Conformation

Some horses could have a sway-backed conformation. The only way you'd know it's truly conformation (rather than having been developed through riding) is if you were able to see the horse as a youngster, long before he was ever ridden. Was he born with a longish back? Are there any specific areas of weakness over the back? It is possible.

The good news for these horses is that with proper work, you can actually build enough top line and supporting muscling that will allow the horse to be ridden in health for the length of his ridden career. But it's good to know when there's a conformation factor, because then you can understand and address the root cause.

Other than conformation, there are many rider-influenced reasons that the horse might hollow his back. Let's look at a few ways that our riding can impact the horse's movement.

2. Restricted "Forward"

I would say that lack of impulsion is probably one of the most common reasons for the horse to have to maintain a hollow back. If he moves with little activity and thrust from the hind end, the horse has to support himself with the front end. He also has to initiate movement from the front end, which will result in the front end pulling the hind end along.

When there is little reach of the hind legs underneath the horse's body, there is little he can do to maintain his own balance, never mind the balance of his rider's weight too. And so the hollow back is the result.

3. Effectiveness of the Aids

The aids are the rider's way of helping communicating with the horse and helping him maintain his balance even while doing movements that require him to change balance all the time. However, if the aids aren't timed correctly, are too harsh (so they block or stun the horse), or too vague (so they do nothing), then once again, the horse's balance is not maintained. 

Luckily, the horse has four legs and so won't literally fall to the ground (well, not usually, at least). Instead, he might hollow his back and brace. 

4. Riding "The Front Of The Horse"

This one is common and takes a lot of time to unlearn if it's a habit. We always do things with our hands and so it's easy to get into the mindset that the horse needs the most help from your hand aids. But too often, what we do with our hands stop the horse, block the energy, interfere with balance, or just plain pull the horse's neck out of alignment with his body! 

5. Rider's Seat (and Position and Technique)

Well, it goes without saying that what the rider does on the back makes a whole lot of difference to the horse. So much of dressage training is rooted in the concept of developing a "good" seat, one that allows the horse's back to rise and fall, allows energy "through" the horse's body, and actually encourages the horse to work more from the hind end.




I'm sure there's more reasons why a horse might hollow the back. As I'm not a vet, I haven't even mentioned all the possible physical problems that could contribute to a hollow back. I'm only looking at this from a riding/training perspective. And I know what you're probably thinking: these are fairly broad generalizations that take years for the average rider to improve and overcome. It's true! The problem is that there is no magic pill, or "buttons" you can put on a horse, that will give you any short cuts on your way toward resolving the hollow back issue. It really is all about time, effort, $$ for lessons, making mistakes and learning from them. And the horses are saints, because they usually give us the time we need to develop these skills, even to their own detriment.

But when it happens - when you feel that first swinging back, or that first "real" impulsion that helps to send the horse's energy forward (not fast!) - it's just the most amazing feeling!

And then you build on these feelings and go step by step into a direction that not only helps you improve your riding skills, but also helps your horse move freer, more healthily, and even more happily... then, you'll realize how valuable your learning path is! Heel Healing: Here’s An On-the-Horse Leg Stretching Exercise

straighten legI've already written about the heels of the rider before. In that post, I explained why I think we should not be forcing our heels down while we ride. Even though we've been told again and again to get those heels down, and it might in fact look good to an uneducated observer, forced heels cause all sorts of problems for the rider and even for the horse.

From collapsed heels to tightened calves and thighs to stiffened seat and lower back, forcing your heels down can affect the clarity and effectiveness of our aids to the horse. And while I said in my article that forcing ain't the way to go, I didn't mean that we should placidly accept the fact that we can never ever get the heels to be lower than the stirrup.

There is one main reason to lower the heels - to lengthen the leg and position it so that the rider's center of balance is evenly distributed on the horse. Many people explain that the rider's legs should be hanging softly in line with the hips, so that if the horse were taken out from underneath the rider, she could still be in a balanced enough position to stay standing up.

So what can we do if our heels don't drop on their own, if we shouldn't force them down?

Do we completely give up on the concept and hope that it's fine to ride along with a stiff leg with tight ligaments and tendons? Well, not really.

In my previous article, I did mention an off-the-horse technique you can use to develop more stretch through the backs of your legs. However, there is an exercise you can do on the horse that will also be of benefit. Try this especially in walk, then canter and finally the trot (yes, even if you post the trot).

You can try it first at the halt just to get the feel.

The secret to dropped heels is in the release of your muscles, ligaments and tendons from your hips all the way down. Here's how.

1. Stand up in your stirrups.

Stand right up. Get your knees straight and go high enough that you are well off the saddle.

2. Lean forward.

Slowly tilt your body so that your thighs are resting toward the pommel. At this point, your thighs will hold your balance for the moment.

3. Let your feet go as far back as possible.

Once you have balance on your thighs, your feet will be free to slide back. Your knees should still be straight at this point. Push the feet past the girth just for a few seconds.

4. Sit down straight in the saddle.

Now sit toward the front of the saddle (don't lean back into the cantle). Make sure you aren't leaning forward or backward.

This is obviously the point where you allow your knees to bend again. But keep your feet in the same position you had them when you were still leaning forward. This way, your hips open enough to allow your feet to fall naturally (well, it might not feel very natural!) under your seat. Ideally, if you had a plumb line drawn from your hips to your heels, your heels would line up with your hips.

Your knees should be straighter now than before. The angle in your knees will be more open, and your leg will feel longer.

5. Allow your heels to drop.

The key is to allow.

Don't let your toes go right through the stirrups. Make sure the balls of your feet are on the stirrups. 

At this point, if you were able to really lengthen out your leg, straighten your knees a bit and sit toward the front of the saddle, you should be able to let your heels take up the extra length by dropping below your stirrups.

And voila, you will find a magically longer leg with heels that want to hang toward the ground! 🙂

I often like to hold on to the bucking strap (or the horn in a western saddle) to really stabilize my seat toward the front of the saddle. This allows me to open my hips more and free my legs to do the stretching that is needed.

Now what?

Well, keep your new position in each of the gaits! Easier said than done, I know! But you won't get there without the practice so get on with it!




You have absolutely no excuse at the walk! Every time your horse is walking, you check and fix your leg position.

As you get better, you won't have to stand up in your stirrups to establish the open hips and long legs. You should be able to find the "feel" just by briefly taking your legs up off the saddle and then extending your leg down.

You might be able to even correct your leg position within the horse's movement.

An Easy Way to Turn in Horseback Riding

Inside leg at the girth! Outside leg behind the girth! Shoulders to the turn! Outside rein... inside rein... lean... collapse... head!

There are so many components to a turn that sometimes we feel like we have to become a pretzel before we are finally in the correct position! There HAS to be an easier way.

Forget all the well-intentioned instructions. Although focusing on specific body parts is useful during the fine-tuning process of the riding position, it can become confusing and sometimes downright difficult during the initial learning process.

Instead of focusing on each and every body part and aid component, morph yourself into one whole. Do everything all at once, let your body respond accordingly, and simplify the aids not only for yourself but also for your horse.

Here's How

Try this off the horse.

Stand with your weight evenly balanced on both feet. Your knees and toes point straight ahead. Your hips are parallel to the front of the room and your torso is in line with your hips. Hold your forearms as if you are holding the reins, with your elbows at your sides, slightly bent into a soft "L" bend.

Turn Right

Now, turn right, but don't let your feet slide out of position. However, your toes can slightly point in the direction of the turn. The depth of the turn determines the size of the circle you ride. So, do a slight turn for a larger circle. Do a deeper turn for a smaller circle. Then take a look at what happened to your body.

Your hips (and seat bones) open to the right. Your weight will naturally be on the right (inside) seat bone. Your torso will point in the direction of the turn, and because your arms are on your sides and acting in tandem with your body, the reins will move exactly according to "textbook" requirements. The inside rein will open slightly while the outside rein will sit on the neck, creating an outside indirect, or "neck" rein.

Now take a look at your leg. The right leg will end up being positioned a little ahead of the left leg. The right knee will open and point slightly to the right. This will serve exactly as it should in saddle: right (inside) leg at the girth, and left (outside) leg behind the girth. Soft, inviting knee on the right, and firm, supporting outside leg on the left. Everything is just as it should be.

And all this happened simply because you turned your torso, from the hips up, in the direction of the turn.

Left Turn

Now try the exact same thing to the left. Feel how your left leg is now at the girth. Your outside leg is slightly behind the girth. Your left rein opens off the neck and your right rein sits on the neck.

Now Teach Your Horse

Positioning yourself while riding is one part of the overall picture. I'm sure you've seen horses run through the rider's aids - it happens all the time. Even if the rider can position herself accurately and set up her balance, it is very possible for her horse to not understand, ignore, or contradict her aids. And so it comes down to the rider to teach her horse how to respond to the body aids.




Be ready to reinforce your aids - maybe you need a stronger outside rein for a few strides. Maybe you should use your inside leg to help create a bend in your horse's body. Perhaps a half-halt is required before the turn to help balance the horse going into a circle.

What we really need most of all is practice. Position yourself into the desired turn and give it a try. Practice some more.

Make sure that your whole body gives just one message: "turn here." Then wait for your horse to respond.

Even if you don't get the desired response right away, don't worry. Be patient enough to repeat many times over, wait for your horse to do his "homework" (back in the stall or the field) and one day, it will all come together.
